How Livingston Was Formed
In 1955, two communities, Doyle and Livingston, joined together to create the modern Town of Livingston.
Doyle was first located northeast of where Livingston is now. It was near a place called Hog Branch. When a railroad was built from Baton Rouge to Hammond, the Doyle community moved in 1901.
Livingston itself started in 1916. It was built by the Lyons Lumber Company. They used 63 acres of land just west of Doyle to create a logging community. This town helped support their timber mill in Garyville, which is south of Livingston on the Mississippi River. Because of this history, Livingston and Garyville are considered "sister cities."
When Livingston was first built, it was very well planned. Every lot had a house, and there were wooden sidewalks in front of every home. Water wells were drilled on each corner so that every house could easily get running water.
