Savannah–Chanelle Vineyards facts for kids
Savannah–Chanelle Vineyards is a special place where grapes are grown to make wine. It covers about 53 acres (21 hectares) of land. This vineyard is located in the hills of the Santa Cruz mountains, high above Saratoga in California. It is also near the famous Silicon Valley.
The vineyard was bought by the Michael Ballard family in 1996. They decided to rename it Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards after their two daughters. The grapevines and the winery building have been on the same hill for more than 100 years!
Why the Name Changed
In 1998, something interesting happened with the vineyard's name. A well-known company called Chanel (which makes perfumes and cosmetics) had a concern about the vineyard using "Chanel" in its name. Even though the vineyard had no connection to the cosmetics company, the Ballard family decided to change the name.
To avoid a long and expensive disagreement, they changed the vineyard's name slightly. It became Savannah–Chanelle Vineyards. This new name first appeared on their wine bottles from 1999.
What Kinds of Wines Are Made?
Savannah–Chanelle Vineyards is especially famous for its Pinot Noir wines. These wines are made from grapes grown right on their land and also from grapes grown nearby.
They also make Zinfandel wines. These are very special because they come from the original Zinfandel grapevines planted way back in 1910. These old vines are the oldest Zinfandel vines still growing in California!
Besides Pinot Noir and Zinfandel, the vineyard also produces other types of wine. These include Cabernet Franc (from vines planted in 1920), Port, and Chardonnay. They make several other kinds of wine too.
