Francesco Saverio Manetti was an Italian doctor, botanist (someone who studies plants), and ornithologist (someone who studies birds). He was also known as Xaviero or Xaverio Manetti. He was born on November 12, 1723, and passed away on his birthday, November 12, 1785.
One of his most famous works is a large book about birds called Ornithologia methodice digesta, which means Natural History of Birds. This book was published in 1776. A type of plant, the Manettia, was even named after him by the famous scientist Carl Linnaeus.
Early Life and Studies
Francesco Manetti was born in a place called Brozzi, Italy. He started his studies in Florence and later went to Pisa. In Pisa, he learned a lot about plants from a teacher named Pier Antonio Micheli.
In 1745, he finished his medical studies and became a doctor, working in Florence. He continued to learn, joining the National Medical College in 1758. There, he studied anatomy, which is the study of the body's structure.
Manetti was a very respected scientist. He was a professor of botany and a member of many important scientific groups. He also kept in touch with other famous scientists of his time, like Carl Linnaeus from Sweden.
Contributions to Science
From 1749 to 1782, Manetti was in charge of the Orto Botanico di Firenze, which is a famous botanical garden in Florence. He also served as the Secretary for the Accademia dei Georgofili, a group focused on agriculture.
The Big Bird Book
Manetti put a lot of effort into publishing his huge work, Storia naturale degli uccelli (Natural History of Birds). This amazing project had five volumes and included 600 hand-colored pictures! These pictures were based on beautiful watercolor paintings.
The book was asked for by Maria Luisa of Spain, who was the Grand Duchess of Tuscany. The first part of the book was dedicated to Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. The detailed pictures in the book were made by talented artists like Lorenzo Lorenzi and Violante Vanni. It was quite special because Violante Vanni was a woman working as an engraver in Florence, which was unusual at the time.

Other Interests
Besides birds, Manetti was also interested in farming. He wrote a book about different types of wheat. He also wrote about wine and how to make it in a book called Oenologia toscana (1773). For this book, he used a pen name, Giovanni Cosimo Villifranchi.
