Saysunee Jana (born June 15, 1974) is a famous wheelchair fencer from Thailand. She is a celebrated athlete who has won many medals at the Paralympic Games. These games are a major international sports event for athletes with disabilities.

Saysunee made history for her country in 2004. At the Athens Paralympics, she became the first woman from Thailand to ever win a Paralympic gold medal. Over her amazing career, she has competed in six Paralympic Games. She has won a total of five gold medals, one silver medal, and four bronze medals.

A Champion's Journey

When Saysunee was 17 years old, she was in a serious motorcycle accident. The accident injured her back and caused both of her legs to be paralyzed. This meant she would need to use a wheelchair. But this challenge did not stop her from chasing her dreams. She discovered wheelchair fencing and became one of the best in the world.

Paralympic Success

Saysunee's first time at the Paralympic Games was in 2004 in Athens, Greece. She had an incredible start, winning a gold medal in the épée event and a bronze medal in the foil event. The épée and foil are two of the three types of swords used in fencing.

Her success continued for many years.

  • 2008 Beijing: She won a bronze medal in the épée event.
  • 2012 London: She won another gold medal in the épée event. She was also chosen to be the flag bearer for Thailand at the opening ceremony, a great honor.
  • 2016 Rio de Janeiro: She earned a silver medal, again in the épée event.
  • 2020 Tokyo: She added another bronze medal to her collection from the épée event.

Record-Breaking 2024 Games

The 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris were truly special for Saysunee. She achieved something incredible by winning gold medals in all three individual fencing events:

  • Épée B
  • Foil B
  • Sabre B

This made her the first female wheelchair fencer ever to win gold in all three weapons at a single Paralympic Games. She also became only the second wheelchair fencer in history to win three individual gold medals at one Games. The first was Roberto Marson of Italy in 1968.

In Paris, she also won a bronze medal with her teammates in the team épée event. This was the first-ever team medal for Thailand in wheelchair fencing. Because of her amazing achievements, she was once again chosen to be Thailand's flag bearer at the opening ceremony.
