Discovering Scarborough House

What Does Scarborough House Look Like?

Scarborough House is a two-story building. It has a main part that is shaped like a cube. This main part has a "hip roof," which means all sides of the roof slope downwards to the walls. There is also a two-story section at the back, called a "rear ell," which also has a hip roof.

The house shows off a style called Neoclassical architecture. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek or Roman buildings. A big feature is its two-story porch, called a "portico." This porch has a flat roof and is supported by pairs of strong, simple columns known as Doric order columns.

Who Built This Historic Home?

The Scarborough House was built by a successful African-American businessman named J. C. Scarborough. He owned a funeral home. His wife, Daisy, also helped create this wonderful home. They built it in 1916, making it a part of Durham's history.

A House with Recycled Materials

What makes Scarborough House even more unique is how it was built. J. C. Scarborough was very clever! He used many materials that he saved from another old house. This other house was the Frank L. Fuller House, built in the 1880s in the Queen Anne Style. It used to stand on E. Main Street. By reusing these materials, Scarborough gave his new house a piece of the past.

A Special Recognition: National Register of Historic Places

Because of its important history and special architecture, Scarborough House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This is a list of places in the United States that are considered important to our country's history and should be protected. Being on this list means Scarborough House is recognized as a valuable part of American heritage.
