The Story of Scargo Tower
Did you know there have been three different Scargo Towers in this exact spot?
The First Two Towers
The very first tower was built in 1874 by a family named Tobey. It was made of wood, but a big storm in 1876 blew it down.
Then, the Tobey family built a second tower. This one was also made of wood and was sometimes called "Tobey Tower." Sadly, it burned down in 1900.
The Current Tower
The tower you see today was built in 1901. It's made of strong cobblestones, which are like rounded stones used for paving. This tower was built to remember the Tobey family.
It stands about thirty feet tall and is on one of the highest hills around. From the top, you can see almost all of Cape Cod Bay, including the town of Provincetown and even the Sagamore Bridge!
What Does the Plaque Say?
Right above the entrance to Scargo Tower, there's a special plaque. A plaque is like a metal sign that tells you something important. This one says that the tower and the hill it's on were given to the town of Dennis in 1929.
It was a gift to honor Charles Tobey (who lived from 1831 to 1888) and Francis Bassett Tobey (who lived from 1833 to 1913). They were "loyal sons" of Dennis, meaning they loved their hometown. Their family, the Tobeys, first settled in this area way back in 1678!
Where is Scargo Tower Located?
Scargo Tower is located on Scargo Hill. This hill is one of the tallest on Cape Cod, reaching about 160 feet (49 m) high. It's a well-known spot in the town of Dennis, Massachusetts.
You can find the tower off Scargo Hill Road, just south of Scargo Lake. It's a great place to visit for amazing views!
