Scarus ghobban is a type of fish that belongs to the parrotfish family. It is also known as the blue-barred parrotfish. Long ago, some writers described these fish as 'parrot fish' because of their colorful looks and unique mouths.
About the Blue-Barred Parrotfish
This fish is usually blue-green or green in color. It can grow to be about 46 centimeters (around 18 inches) long.
It often has a pink stripe down the middle of its top and bottom fins. The underside of its body might look pinkish or yellowish. You might also see blue marks around its side fins, which are called pectoral fins.
Where They Live
The blue-barred parrotfish can be found in the waters around Africa. They also live in the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. You can find them as far away as the Galápagos Islands and in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean.
Their Home
Scarus ghobban likes to live in places with sandy bottoms. They also enjoy living near coral reefs.
Male parrotfish usually live in waters that are about 9.1 meters (around 30 feet) deep. Female parrotfish tend to live in deeper waters than the males.
