The bunch grass lizard (Sceloporus scalaris) is a small lizard. It belongs to a family of lizards called phrynosomatids. These lizards are often found in grassy areas.

About the Bunch Grass Lizard

The bunch grass lizard is part of a group of similar lizards. Scientists often study these groups to understand how different species are related. The exact number of species in this group can sometimes change as new research comes out.

Where They Live

Bunch grass lizards live in many parts of Mexico. Their home range stretches north into the southern United States. You can find them in Arizona and New Mexico. They usually live in high grasslands, often between 1,500 and 3,000 meters (about 4,900 to 9,800 feet) above sea level.

What They Look Like

Bunch grass lizards are usually grey. They often have bright orange and yellow colors. These colors are usually around their neck and behind their front legs. Male lizards have more of these bright colors on their bellies. Female lizards tend to have white undersides. Adult lizards are small, measuring about 52 to 62 millimeters (about 2 to 2.4 inches) from their snout to the base of their tail.

How They Have Babies

Many types of Sceloporus lizards, including the bunch grass lizard, are ovoviviparous. This means the mother carries the eggs inside her body. The eggs hatch inside her, and then she gives birth to live young. Young lizards are often seen for the first time in late August.
