The making process of Schaumrolle

Schaumrollen, also known as Schillerlocken, are a yummy sweet treat from Austria. They are sometimes called "foam rollers" because of their light, airy filling.

These pastries are shaped like a cone or a tube. They are often filled with sweet whipped cream or a fluffy meringue. Sometimes, they might have an unsweetened cream inside. Each Schaumrolle is usually about 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide.

To make them, thin strips of pastry are wrapped around a special cone-shaped metal tube. Then, they are baked until golden. The sweet versions are often rolled in coarse sugar or powdered sugar before they go into the oven.

The Story of Schaumrollen

Schaumrollen are a type of cream horn. This dessert became popular in North America thanks to Mennonites who moved there from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. People from the Danube region also loved these treats.

Schaumrollen can be up to five inches (12.7 cm) long. They are often served during special times. You might find them at holidays like Christmas, or at celebrations such as weddings and first Communion parties.

Why the Name "Schillerlocken"?

Friedrich Schiller by Ludovike Simanowiz
Portrait of Friedrich Schiller by Ludovike Simanowiz. His golden curly hair inspired a popular name for the pastry.

The name Schillerlocken comes from a famous painting. It's a portrait of a poet named Friedrich Schiller. The painting, by Anton Graff, shows Schiller with his blond, curly hair.

This portrait was copied many times and became very well-known. People started calling the pastry "Schillerlocken" because its shape and color reminded them of Schiller's golden curls.

It's interesting to know that in Germany, "Schillerlocken" means something completely different! There, it refers to smoked fish, specifically the belly flaps of a type of dogfish.
