How Schoep's Started

Schoep's Ice Cream was started by E.J. Schoephoester in 1928. He first made and sold his ice cream in his own grocery store. By 1937, his ice cream was very popular in the local area.
In 1940, E.B. Schoephoester sold his company to Peter B. Thomsen. Peter was a butter maker. The Thomsen family has owned the company ever since. In 2008, nineteen members of the Thomsen family partly owned it. By 2018, four members of the third generation of the Thomsen family worked at the main office in Madison.
A New Owner for Schoep's
On October 14, 2019, Schoep's Ice Cream announced a big change. The company was going through a process called receivership. This means a court-appointed person helps manage the company's finances. On February 27, 2020, Schoep's was sold to Brothers International Desserts. This company is based in California.
Making Lots of Ice Cream
All of Schoep's Ice Cream is made in one factory. This factory is on Division Street in Madison, Wisconsin. By 2008, Schoep's was making 6,000 gallons of ice cream every hour! They produced 2.5 million gallons each year. Because of this high amount, Schoep's is known as the top ice cream maker in Wisconsin.
To help with their growth, Schoep's opened a new building in 2005. This was a large distribution center. It cost $7 million and was 46,000 square feet. This new building had space for 3,600 large pallets of ice cream. It also had 14 loading docks. Before this, Schoep's shipped all their ice cream from only two docks at their factory.
In 2016, Schoep's made 10 million gallons of ice cream. Their sales reached over $60 million. They shipped their ice cream to all 50 states in the U.S. and to Puerto Rico. In 2017, they made even more, over 12 million gallons! Besides ice cream, Schoep's also makes other frozen treats. These include frozen yogurt, frozen custard, lite ice cream, sherbert, and ice cream novelties.
Who Else Gets Schoep's Ice Cream?
Schoep's Ice Cream, under its own name, is mostly sold in the Midwest United States. But they also make ice cream for other companies. They produce ice cream that is sold under different brand names.
Ice Cream for Walgreens
Since 1993, Schoep's has been the only company to make ice cream for Walgreens. This means if you buy Walgreens brand ice cream, it was made by Schoep's! This special agreement with Walgreens makes up more than 25 percent of Schoep's business.
Other Cool Treats
Schoep's also makes and sells other popular frozen treats. They are allowed to make items like Eskimo Pie, Popsicle, Heath bars, and Nestlé Crunch Ice Cream Bars. Schoep's also makes the supermarket version of Gilles Frozen Custard.
