History of Crunch
How Crunch Began
The Crunch bar was first created in 1938. It was invented by the Swiss company Nestlé at their factory in Fulton, New York, in the United States.
For kids in the United Kingdom, this chocolate bar was known as "Dairy Crunch" from the 1960s until the 1990s, when it also became known as "Crunch."
Helping Cocoa Farmers
In 2013, Nestlé USA announced a cool plan. They decided that all the cocoa beans used for their regular Crunch bars would be "certified." This means the cocoa was grown in a way that helps cocoa farmers and makes sure there will be enough cocoa for the future. This plan was part of something called the Nestlé Cocoa Plan.
New Ownership for Crunch
In January 2018, Nestlé decided to sell many of its candy brands in the U.S. This included the Crunch bar. An Italian chocolate company called Ferrero SpA, which makes Nutella, bought these brands for about $6.9 billion. Ferrero then put these new brands under their Ferrara Candy Company.
People thought Nestlé sold these brands because new candies like Kinder, and many other snack choices, made it harder for older candy bars like Crunch to grow. This sale was a big deal because it was the first time the Crunch bar changed owners in almost 100 years! Other candies sold to Ferrero included Butterfinger, Nerds, and LaffyTaffy.
Changing the Wrapper
Around 2023, Nestlé stopped wrapping Crunch bars in aluminium foil with a paper sleeve. This old way took a lot of time. Now, Crunch bars come in a single, shiny plastic wrapper, which is much more common for snacks today.
Crunch Sizes Today
As of 2025, you can find Crunch bars in the U.S. in different sizes. These include the Classic size (1.55 ounces), Fun Size, Minis, and a Giant bar (4.4 ounces). The Classic bar is now also made in segments, so it's easier to break apart.
Other Crunch Treats
Besides the classic chocolate bar, Nestlé also makes or licenses other fun Crunch products:
