Krackel is a yummy chocolate bar made by The Hershey Company. It's special because it has crunchy crisped rice pieces mixed into the chocolate! This tasty treat first came out on September 14, 1938.

Discover Krackel: A Crunchy Chocolate Bar

Krackel is a delicious candy bar made with smooth milk chocolate and crispy rice pieces. For a long time, Krackel was sold as its own full-sized chocolate bar. This was true until 1997.

After 1997, you could only find Krackel as one of the four small bars in a pack of Hershey's Miniatures. This went on for 17 years! Then, in 2014, the full-sized Krackel bar came back. However, it was later stopped again. Now, you can usually only find Krackel in the miniature candy bar size.

What's Inside Krackel: Ingredients Over Time

When Krackel was first made in 1938, it actually had almonds in it! The next year, in 1939, peanuts were added to the recipe too. But by 1941, both the almonds and peanuts were removed.

Instead, Krackel started using small, crispy rice balls. These rice pieces are about 2 millimeters wide. The larger Krackel bar that returned in 2014 used mostly the same ingredients. Even though the ingredients usually don't have gluten, Hershey's does not call Krackel "gluten-free." This is because grains can sometimes get mixed with other grains that do contain gluten by accident.

Krackel's Look: Packaging Changes

You can easily spot a Krackel wrapper! It has a bright red background with white letters. There's also yellow writing for the smaller details.

In 2014, Hershey's made a big change to its candy wrappers. This was part of a plan to help the environment. The new Krackel wrappers, along with other Hershey's miniature chocolates, used less paper. This change helped save about 270,000 pounds of paper each year! That's like saving around 1,950 trees every year.
