A Long History of Learning
The School of Mining Engineering is very old. It started way back in 1777. Its first name was the Academy of Mining and Underground Geography of Almadén. It was located in Almadén, a town famous for its big mercury mine. This town is about 300 kilometers south of Madrid. The school's lessons were inspired by a famous mining university in Germany.
Why Mercury Was Important
Mercury was very important a long time ago. In the 1500s, people in the Americas used it. They used a process called amalgamation. This process used mercury to get gold and silver out of rocks. Spain sent a lot of mercury to the Americas. There was also some mercury found in Peru.
Moving to Madrid
Later, Spain lost many of its colonies in South America. Also, coal became a very important fuel. Because of these changes, Almadén was no longer the best place for a national mining school. So, in the 1830s, the school moved to Madrid.
The School Building
The building where the school is now was designed by Ricardo Velázquez Bosco. He was a famous architect. Like some of his other buildings, this one has special ceramic decorations. These decorations were made by Daniel Zuloaga. In 1985, the building was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. This means it is a very important cultural heritage site in Spain.
