The School of Mining Engineering of Madrid (in Spanish: Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Minas y Energía) is a famous engineering school. It is located in Madrid, the capital city of Spain. This school is part of the Technical University of Madrid. This larger university was created in 1971. It brought together several important technical schools.

A Look Back: History of the School

The School of Mining Engineering is very old. It started even before the building it is in now. The school began in 1777. It was first called the Academia de Minería y Geografía Subterránea de Almadén. This means the Academy of Mining and Underground Geography of Almadén.

From Almadén to Madrid

The first location of the school was Almadén. This town had a very important mercury mine. Almadén is about 300 kilometers south of Madrid. The school's lessons were similar to those at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology. This was a famous mining school in Germany.

Mercury became very important in the Americas in the 1500s. This was because of a process called amalgamation. Amalgamation uses mercury to help extract gold and silver from rocks. Mercury from Spain was sent to the Americas for this purpose. There was also some mercury found in Peru.

Later, Spain lost many of its colonies in South America. Also, coal became much more important for energy. Because of these changes, Almadén was no longer the best place for a national mining school. So, in the 1830s, the school moved to Madrid.

The School's Special Building

The school's building in Madrid was designed by an architect named Ricardo Velázquez Bosco. He designed many buildings. This building, like some others he created, has special ceramic decorations. These decorations were made by an artist named Daniel Zuloaga.

In 1985, the building was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. This means it is a site of cultural interest. It is protected because of its historical and artistic importance.
