Scotia Tower is a very tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. It's a well-known landmark and an important part of the city's business area.
About Scotia Tower
Scotia Tower stands at 138 meters (about 453 feet) tall. It has 35 floors! This makes it one of the tallest buildings in Vancouver. It was finished in 1977, which means it has been a part of the city's skyline for many years.
What's Inside Scotia Tower?
This big building is home to the main offices for Scotiabank in British Columbia. Scotiabank is a large bank. But it's not just offices inside! Below the ground, you'll find the Vancouver Centre Mall. This mall has many different shops and even theatres.
The Vancouver Centre Mall is connected to other big shopping areas like Pacific Centre and Hudson's Bay. You can walk between them underground! These passages also link to a SkyTrain subway station. This makes it easy for people to get around without going outside.
A Look Back in Time
Before Scotia Tower was built, the corner of Georgia and Granville Streets looked very different. There used to be a beautiful old store called Birk's Store. It was a fancy building from the Edwardian era. In 1974, Birk's Store was taken down to make space for Scotia Tower and Vancouver Centre.
Birk's was actually the first store to open in the new shopping area after the tower was built. However, it later moved to a different location. Today, a London Drugs store is in that spot.
On the Georgia Street side of the Scotia Tower-Vancouver Centre, there was once a movie theatre called the Strand Theatre. It was the only movie house in Vancouver's "Theatre Row" that wasn't directly on Granville Street. This old movie theatre was later replaced by the Vancouver Centre Cinemas in 1977, which are now closed.
