Scott, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Scott is a small, quiet place in Cole County, Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's managed by the county.

Scott is located right next to Grays Creek, a small waterway, and is just a short distance northwest of Jefferson City, which is the capital city of Missouri.

The Story of Scott's Name

The area we now call Scott has had a few different names over the years!

At first, it was known as Scotts Station. This name came about because a post office was set up there in 1873. A "station" often meant a stop along a railway or a place where mail was handled.

Later, in 1894, the name of the post office changed to Duck. We don't know exactly why it was called Duck, but this name didn't last very long. The post office closed down just two years later, in 1896.

Eventually, the community became known as Scott. This name was chosen to honor a local judge who was important to the area. So, the place kept a part of its original "Scotts Station" name, but in a simpler form.
