Scott Stewart Bakula (born October 9, 1954) is an American actor. He is famous for his roles in two popular science-fiction TV shows. He played Sam Beckett in Quantum Leap. For this role, he won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards. He also starred as Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise.

From 2014 to 2021, Scott Bakula played Special Agent Dwayne Cassius "King" Pride on NCIS: New Orleans. He was also nominated for a Tony Award for his work on Broadway. He appeared in the comedy-drama series Men of a Certain Age. He was also a guest star in Chuck as the main character's father.

Scott Bakula's Early Life

Scott Bakula was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His mother was Sally and his father, Joseph Stewart Bakula, was a lawyer. Scott has a younger brother and a younger sister. His family name, Bakula, comes from Czech and Bohemian ancestors. It means "stick" in their language.

He went to Jefferson College. Then he attended the University of Kansas for a short time. He left college when he was offered a chance to tour with the musical Godspell. He later decided to move to New York City to pursue acting.

Scott Bakula's Acting Career

Scott Bakula moved to New York City in 1976. He started his acting career in 1977 in the musical Shenandoah. In 1982, he made his first appearance on Broadway. He was an understudy in the musical Is There Life After High School?. The next year, he played baseball legend Joe DiMaggio in Marilyn: An American Fable.

Later, he moved to Los Angeles. He got a role in the TV sitcom Designing Women. This helped his career take off. He then starred in two short TV series: Gung Ho and Eisenhower & Lutz.

Quantum Leap and Star Trek

In 1988, Bakula returned to New York to star in Romance/Romance on Broadway. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for this role. After that, he got the main role in the science fiction TV series Quantum Leap. The show ran from 1989 to 1993.

In Quantum Leap, Bakula played Dr. Sam Beckett. Sam was a time traveler who got stuck in the past. He had to fix things that went wrong in different times. Scott Bakula won a Golden Globe Award for his acting in this show. He also received four Emmy Award nominations.

From 1993 to 1995, he played Peter Hunt in the sitcom Murphy Brown. In 1996, he starred in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. He also voiced Danny Cat in the animated movie Cats Don't Dance (1997). In 1999, he played Jim Olmeyer in the movie American Beauty.

From 2001 to 2005, Bakula played Jonathan Archer. Archer was the captain of Earth's first Warp 5 starship in Star Trek: Enterprise. In 2006, he voiced Captain Archer again for the Star Trek: Legacy video games.

Recent Roles and Appearances

In 2009, Scott Bakula appeared in the movie The Informant!. He also started a recurring role on the TV series Chuck. He played Stephen J. Bartowski, the main character's father. From 2009 to 2011, he was one of the main characters, Terry Elliott, in TNT's Men of a Certain Age.

In 2011, Bakula had a voice cameo in the movie Source Code. He said his famous line "Oh, boy" from Quantum Leap. He also appeared in the documentary The Captains. In this film, William Shatner interviewed him about his life and career.

In 2014, Bakula was chosen to star in the spin-off series NCIS: New Orleans. He played Dwayne Pride, the lead character. This show started as a two-part episode of the original NCIS.

In 2023, it was announced that Bakula would return to the New York stage. He starred in the musical The Connector in early 2024. In August 2024, he played the main role in Man of La Mancha in Peterborough, New Hampshire.

Scott Bakula's Personal Life

Scott Bakula married Krista Neumann in 1981. They had two children together. They divorced in 1995. In 2009, he married actress Chelsea Field after being together for 15 years. Scott and Chelsea also have two children.

Scott Bakula has said that he was rarely home during the filming of Quantum Leap. Because of this, he decided to put his family first in his later projects. For example, his contract for Star Trek: Enterprise required filming to finish by 6 PM every Wednesday. This allowed him to have dinner with his family. While filming NCIS: New Orleans, he went home to Los Angeles every weekend to be with his wife.
