Donald Scott Smith (born February 13, 1955 – died November 30, 2000) was a talented Canadian musician. He was the bass player for the popular rock band Loverboy. This band is famous for their hit songs like "Working for the Weekend" and "Turn Me Loose". Loverboy also had big hits in the U.S., such as "Lovin' Every Minute of It" in 1985 and "This Could Be the Night" in 1986. The band won six Juno Awards (which are like Canada's Grammy Awards) in 1982. They have sold more than 23 million records around the world.

Early Life and Musical Start
Scott Smith was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He first learned to play the guitar. When he was twelve years old, he switched to playing the bass guitar.
Music Career Highlights
Scott Smith was studying English at the University of Manitoba. Then, he got a call from Loverboy guitarist Paul Dean. Paul invited him to join their new band in Vancouver. Scott became the bass player, replacing another musician named Jim Clench.
Besides playing bass, Scott also helped write some of Loverboy's songs. One of these was the rock hit "Lucky Ones" from 1983.
After Loverboy
Loverboy took a break in 1988. After that, Scott joined a band called Dangerous. He played with Mike Reno and Brian MacLeod in this group. For a short time, he also worked as a late-night radio DJ at CFOX.
Loverboy got back together for a special concert in 1991. Then, they officially reunited in 1993. They continued to tour and perform throughout the 1990s. Scott once said in an interview that they were back because they loved to rock. He also mentioned that people wanted to book them for shows.
Tragic Disappearance
On November 30, 2000, Scott Smith was sailing his boat, named Sea Major. It was an 11-meter (36-foot) boat. He was with two friends off the coast of San Francisco, near the Golden Gate Bridge. A very large wave swept him off the boat and into the water.
The Coast Guard and a private company searched for him. Friends and family also helped in the search, but they could not find him. Scott Smith was declared missing and was presumed to have been lost at sea.
Personal Life
Scott Smith lived in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. He was a father to two sons.
