What Was Scottish Voice?
Scottish Voice was a political group that aimed to represent people in Scotland. It was considered a "centre-right" party. This means its ideas were generally about supporting businesses and individual freedom. They also believed in keeping Scotland as part of the United Kingdom.
Who Started It?
The party was founded by Archie Stirling. He was a wealthy landowner and businessman. Even though he believed Scotland should stay in the UK, he said that this idea was not the only focus of his new party.
What Did They Believe?
Many people who joined Scottish Voice used to support the Scottish Conservatives. However, they felt that the Conservative party had lost its way in Scotland. Scottish Voice wanted to offer a new choice for voters.
Trying for Votes: The 2007 Election
Scottish Voice tried to win seats in the Scottish Parliament election, 2007. This election happened in May 2007.
What Did Polls Say?
Before the election, a newspaper called The Scotsman reported on a poll. This poll suggested that 21% of voters might choose Scottish Voice. If this had happened, they could have won a seat in the Scottish Parliament.
What Happened in the Election?
However, other news reports said that the party's campaign was not going well. They even brought in election helpers from Canada. On the day before the election, new polls showed much less support for Scottish Voice. In the end, Scottish Voice did not win any seats. Only the Scottish Green Party among the smaller parties managed to get elected.
How Much Did It Cost?
Scottish Voice received 8,782 votes across Scotland. Later, it was revealed that the party spent £184,920 on its election campaign. This means they spent about £21.06 for every single vote they received. This made them the most expensive party per vote in that election.
Why Did It End?
In April 2012, Archie Stirling announced that he was closing down the party. Scottish Voice stopped existing five years after it was founded.
