Screw press facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A screw press is a special machine that uses a big screw to push things down with a lot of force. Imagine a giant screw that turns and pushes a flat part, called a ram, up and down. This machine can be powered by turning a handle or a wheel.

The screw press works by changing a spinning motion into a strong, slow push. When you turn the handle or wheel, the coarse (rough) screw moves the ram downwards. This creates a powerful force, even from a small turn. Many screw presses have heavy balls or weights on the handle. These weights help keep the machine moving and add extra power to the push, making it easier to use.

A Look Back: History of the Screw Press

The idea for the screw press is very old! The Romans first invented and used it almost 2,000 years ago, around the first century AD. They mainly used these presses to squeeze wine from grapes and olive oil from olives.

Much later, in the mid-1400s, the screw press became super important for Gutenberg's printing press. This invention changed the world by making it possible to print books much faster than ever before.

What Are Screw Presses Used For?

Screw presses are very versatile machines used in many different ways.

Shaping Metal

In metalworking, a screw press is a powerful tool used to change the shape of metal or cut it. It's often used to punch holes in thin sheets of metal all at once. This is much faster than cutting or drilling each hole separately.

When punching holes, the press uses two main parts: a punch and a matching die. The punch fits perfectly into the die. Both parts are usually made very carefully and are very hard. You place the metal between the punch and the die, and when the machine operates, the punch cuts right through the metal. The punch and die can be any shape, so you can make all sorts of interesting holes and cutouts.

Screw presses can also be used for forging. This is where metal is heated and then shaped by force. The dies used for forging can be flat or have different shapes to mold the metal into the desired form.

Making Books

Screw presses are also helpful in hand book binding. After the covers are glued onto a book, a screw press helps keep them flat and perfectly lined up with the pages while the glue dries. This makes sure the finished book looks neat and professional.

Meet the Fly Press

A fly press is a special kind of screw press. Instead of just a handle, its screw shaft is turned by a heavy flywheel or two heavy weights (called fly weights) at the ends of a bar. You can turn this wheel by hand, or sometimes a motor can spin it using a special clutch. The heavy wheel helps keep the shaft moving with its momentum, giving the press extra power.

A hand-operated fly press is one of the simplest types of presses. It usually has a heavy base, a handle, a main body, an arm, the screw itself, a ram (the part that pushes down), a stop collar to control its movement, and guides to keep everything straight.
