Discovering Scroggins' Past
Settlers first came to the Scroggins area in the 1850s. The community got its name from Milt Scroggins. He was a local person who ran a sawmill, which cuts wood into lumber.
Early Growth and Railroad Days
Scroggins became an important place for shipping goods. This happened when the East Line and Red River Railroad was built through the area in 1877. A post office was opened in Scroggins in 1891. By 1896, the sawmill was still working, and there were three stores.
Changes Over Time
From 1914 through the 1930s, only about 25 people lived in Scroggins. There was just one store and a few scattered homes. After World War II, the community started to grow again. By 1952, Scroggins had three businesses and 80 residents. In 1988, another business opened, and the population grew to 125 people. This number stayed the same in 2000.
The Catalpa Worm Festival
In June 2004, the owners of the community's general store, Ben and Joanne Glaze, started the Catalpa Worm Festival. This festival was created to bring people together and celebrate their community. Catalpa trees and the worms that live on them are very common in the Scroggins area. The community also has its own post office with the ZIP code 75480.
