What's in a Name? The Story of Sea Bird Island
Have you ever wondered how places get their names? Sea Bird Island got its name from an old steamboat! This steamboat was called the Sea Bird. It was one of the very first boats of its kind to travel on the Fraser River. This happened during a time known as the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush, which was from 1858 to 1860.
How the Island's Name Changed Over Time
The island was first officially named in 1930. Back then, it was spelled Seabird Island (as one word). But later, in 1967, the name was changed to its current spelling: Sea Bird Island (two words). This small change made the name match the old steamboat's name exactly.
