Sea Otter Cove is a special, quiet spot located at the far north-western tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It has been a part of Cape Scott Provincial Park since 1973. This beautiful cove is surrounded by thick forests. You can only reach it by boat or by hiking a challenging trail.

What is Sea Otter Cove?

Sea Otter Cove is a secluded bay on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island. It is found north of Mount St. Patrick and San Josef Bay. The area is known for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere.

How Sea Otter Cove Got Its Name

The cove was named a long time ago, in 1786. Captain James Hanna gave it its name. He named it after his ship, which was called the Sea Otter.

Location and Environment

Right at the entrance of Sea Otter Cove, you'll find a cluster of small islands. These islands are known as the Helen Islands. Like many places on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Sea Otter Cove gets a lot of rain every year. This high rainfall helps the surrounding forests grow thick and green.

History of Sea Otter Cove

In the early 1900s, some people from Denmark tried to build a new life here. They wanted to create settlements in the Sea Otter Cove area.

Why Settlements Didn't Last

Life in Sea Otter Cove was very difficult for the Danish settlers. The natural environment was harsh, and the area was extremely isolated. There were no roads connecting the cove to other towns. A plan to build a road never happened. Because of these challenges, the settlers found it too hard to stay. The last people left Sea Otter Cove in 1925.

What It's Like Today

Today, Sea Otter Cove is a quiet and wild place. It is part of a provincial park, which means its natural beauty is protected. Some boaters might avoid it because it has a reputation for being tricky. However, it is a unique place for those who enjoy remote wilderness.

Margaret Sharcott visited Sea Otter Cove in 1954. She described it like this:

The dark evergreen forest looked almost black in the misty rain. It hung over the whole cove. Near the beach, under these dark trees, were the remains of old boat-houses. Their wooden poles were rotting and black from the wet weather. Further along, a broken-down house leaned on its old foundation. Young fir trees grew where a farm used to be. But you could still see the fruit trees that were planted long ago. Bits of fences and broken wood from old buildings stuck out from the tangled grass and wild blackberry vines.
