Sea Serpent at RCDB

Sea Serpent is an exciting steel roller coaster located at Morey's Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey. It first opened in 1984 and was built by a company called Vekoma. This ride was special because it was the very first "boomerang-style" roller coaster ever built in the United States!

The Sea Serpent was a big part of making the Marine Pier into the new Mariner's Landing area in 1984. Today, it sits right in the middle of Mariner's Landing. It's a famous landmark for the pier, just like The Giant Wheel.

What is the Sea Serpent Roller Coaster?

The Sea Serpent is a type of roller coaster known as a "Boomerang" model. This means riders go forwards and backwards on the same track! It's known for its unique layout that sends you through inversions twice.

How Does the Sea Serpent Ride Work?

When you get on the Sea Serpent, you'll find yellow, orange, and green trains. Each train has 7 cars, and 28 riders can fit on one train. You sit two people across in two rows.

The adventure begins as the train slowly climbs backwards up a tall, 116-foot lift hill. This climb takes about thirty seconds. Once you reach the top, you drop down at a super fast speed of 47 miles per hour!

Twists and Turns on the Sea Serpent

As you zoom downwards, you'll go right through the station. Then, get ready for the first inversion: a "Cobra Roll." This part of the ride pushes you with up to 5.2 G-forces, which feels like you're much heavier than usual! After the Cobra Roll, you'll go through a full "Loop."

Next, the train reaches a second lift section. This lift pulls you up for a few seconds, then releases you. Now, you're going backwards! You'll experience the Loop again, but this time going in reverse. Then, you'll go through the Cobra Roll backwards too! This sends you back through the station and partly up the first lift hill. Finally, the train slowly lowers back into the station.

In total, the Sea Serpent takes you through 935 feet of track and three inversions, both forwards and backwards!

Recent Updates to the Sea Serpent

During the off-season between 2019 and 2020, the Sea Serpent got a cool makeover. This included replacing parts like the second lift hill, the brakes, and even the trains themselves. These updates help keep the ride running smoothly and safely for everyone.
