Seager is a place in Ulster County, New York, within a beautiful area called Catskill Park and the Catskill Mountains. It used to be a small village, but it slowly disappeared after a big industry there, called tanning, stopped in the late 1800s. Today, Seager is mostly just one house and a starting point for a hiking path called the Seager West Branch Trail.

What Was Seager?

Seager was once a small community, or "hamlet," nestled in the Catskill Mountains. A hamlet is like a tiny village, often with just a few homes and businesses. Many small places like Seager grew up around specific industries. When that industry faded, so did the community. Seager's story is a great example of how towns can change over time.

Life in Seager: The Tanning Industry

The main reason Seager existed was because of the tanning industry. Tanning is a process that turns animal hides (skins) into leather. This leather was then used to make shoes, belts, bags, and many other useful items.

• Why the Catskills? The Catskill Mountains were perfect for tanning because they had two important things:
  • Lots of hemlock trees: The bark of hemlock trees contains a special chemical called tannin, which is essential for turning hides into leather.
  • Plenty of clean water: Tanning uses a lot of water, and the mountain streams provided a fresh supply.
• How it worked: Tanning factories, called tanneries, were built near these resources. People moved to places like Seager to work in these tanneries. The village grew as workers and their families settled there, creating a lively community.

Why Did Seager Disappear?

By the late 1800s, the tanning industry in the Catskills began to decline.

• New methods: New ways of tanning leather were developed that didn't rely as much on hemlock bark.
• Trees ran out: Many of the hemlock trees had been cut down, making it harder to find the necessary bark.
• Moving on: As the tanneries closed, people had to move away to find new jobs. Without the industry, the village of Seager slowly faded away. Buildings were left empty, and the population shrank until almost nothing was left.
