Seamus Rafter (born January 24, 1873 – died September 12, 1918) was an important Irish person. He helped start the Gaelic League in Enniscorthy, Wexford. The Gaelic League worked to keep the Irish language and culture alive. Seamus Rafter was also a leader in the Wexford group of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. This group worked for Irish independence. He took part in the 1916 Easter Rising in Enniscorthy, which was a rebellion for Irish freedom.

Seamus Rafter's Life and Role

Seamus Rafter was born in Monalee, Ballindaggin, Ireland. After the 1916 rebellion in Enniscorthy, he was sent to prison in England. He was held at Dartmoor prison. He was first sentenced to death, but this was changed to five years in prison.

After about one year, many of the rebels were set free. Rafter continued to gather people to support Irish independence. He died on September 12, 1918. He passed away from injuries he got in an accident. This happened while he was working with materials for the cause of Irish independence. His funeral gathering was held in Enniscorthy Cathedral. A large group of Irish Volunteers and local people marched in a parade. They went to his burial place in Ballindaggin Cemetery. This cemetery is about five miles from Enniscorthy. People remembered his life in a special event in 1949.

Remembering Seamus Rafter

In 1958, a stone statue of Rafter was put up in Abbey Square in Enniscorthy. This statue honors those who took part in the Easter Rising.

The Séamus Rafter Bridge in Enniscorthy was built in 1991. It was named after him. Rafter Street, also in Enniscorthy, was also named in his honor.
