The Sears, Roebuck and Company Department Store in Miami, Florida was a special building. It was built in 1929 for the company Sears, Roebuck and Company. This building was one of the first examples of Art Deco style in the area. It was truly amazing to see!
The Sears building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 8, 1997. This list helps protect important places in the United States. Today, only a part of the original building, its tower, still stands.
History of the Sears Building
The Sears store was built in 1929. It was a very modern building for its time. It showed off the new Art Deco style. This was even before many of the famous Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive were built.
In the early 1980s, the area around the store changed a lot. The building also started to get very old and damaged. Because of these problems and fewer people shopping there, the store closed in 1983.
After it closed, the building was empty for many years. It was left alone and became a target for graffiti and damage. Sears could not sell the property. So, in 1992, they gave the land to Dade County. The Sears signs were taken down that same year.
The Tower That Remains
The building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. By 2001, most of the original store was torn down. Only a seven-story tower from the old building was saved.
This tower was kept and became part of a new building. It was included in the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. This new center was built in 2006. It is a place where people can go to see shows and performances. The old Sears tower now stands as a reminder of Miami's past.
