Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia (born in August 1561 – died on December 16, 1627) was a Spanish monk, a talented musician, and a composer. He is known for his amazing organ music.

He first worked as an organist at the cathedral in Huesca from 1585 to 1603. An organist is someone who plays the organ, a very large musical instrument. Later, he moved to a more important job as a music teacher (called maestro de música) at La Seo Cathedral in Zaragoza.

In 1618, he published a collection of his musical works. We still have eighteen of his pieces for keyboard instruments today. Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia is seen as the first really important musician from the Aragonese School of music. This was a group of musicians centered in Zaragoza.

His Music

Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia wrote many pieces, especially for the organ. His music was very popular in his time.

Organ Music

Organ music is written specifically for the pipe organ. It often sounds grand and powerful. Here are some examples of his organ pieces:

Vocal music is music written for singers. Sebastian Aguilera de Heredia also composed music for voices.

  • Canticum Beatissimae Virginis Deiparae. Octo modis seu tonis compositium, quaternis vocibus, quinis, senis et octonis concinendum (Zaragoza, Tip. Pedro Cabarte, 1618). This long title describes a collection of songs for the Blessed Virgin Mary, written for four, five, six, or eight voices.
