Sebbins Pond is about 0.3 miles long and 0.2 miles wide. It covers an area of 20 acres. That's a good size for canoeing and other water activities.

A Bit of History

The pond is named after a man named Sebbins. In 1735, he set up a small business near the pond. He made wooden shingles there. Then, he would take them to the nearby Merrimack River for shipping. This was even before the first permanent settlers arrived in Bedford in 1737.

Who Uses Sebbins Pond?

On one side of Sebbins Pond is Camp Kettleford. This camp is run by the Swift Water Council of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Girl Scouts use the pond for fun activities like canoeing and swimming. The rest of the pond's edge has about 20 private homes. Many of these used to be summer cabins. They have now been updated for year-round living. There is no public access point to the pond.

Water Flow: In and Out

Sebbins Pond gets its water from several natural springs. It also gets water from a small stream. This stream flows from a nearby pond called Silver Springs Pond. The water leaves Sebbins Pond through Sebbins Brook. This brook flows southeast and joins with water from Sandy Pond. Finally, it flows into the Merrimack River.

What is a "Great Pond"?

In New Hampshire, any body of water larger than 10 acres is called a "great pond." Sebbins Pond is a great pond because it's 20 acres. This means it is public property. The state holds it in trust for everyone to enjoy.
