Second Sudanese Civil War facts for kids
The Second Sudanese Civil War was a very long and difficult conflict that happened in Sudan. It lasted for 22 years, from 1983 to 2005. This war was mainly between the central Sudanese government and a group called the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).
This war was like a continuation of an earlier conflict called the First Sudanese Civil War, which happened from 1955 to 1972. Even though the Second Sudanese Civil War started in southern Sudan, it later spread to other areas like the Nuba mountains and the Blue Nile region.
The war had a huge impact on the people of Sudan. About two million people died because of the fighting, hunger, and sickness. Also, four million people in southern Sudan had to leave their homes. They became displaced, meaning they were forced to move at least once during the war. Many terrible things happened to people during this time. Six years after the war ended, South Sudan became an independent country.
