Secret Girls (シークレットガールズ, Shīkuretto Gāruzu) is a fun Japanese drama series. It was made for online viewing and DVDs. The show was created by Fuji TV, Bandai, and Dentsu.

The story is about a fictional girl group called Secret Girls. The members of this group lead a double life. By day, they are normal middle school students. But they are also famous idol singers! They must keep their idol lives a secret from everyone around them.

Secret Girls had two seasons and a total of 19 episodes. It aired from 2011 to 2013. Each episode came out monthly on special DVDs. These DVDs were given as a bonus with the Ciao manga magazine. Later, the episodes were also available online on Fuji TV's streaming service, Misanga [ja].

The show's cast also became a real singing group. They performed songs from the show at music events. Secret Girls also inspired a manga comic series and light novel books. There was even a toy line based on the show!

What is Secret Girls About?

The story follows two middle school students, Rio Shibaski and Maya Aramaki. They are big fans of a secret idol group called "Secrets." No one knows who the members of "Secrets" really are.

One day, Rio and Maya discover an amazing secret! The members of "Secrets" are actually their own classmates. Soon, Rio and Maya are asked to join the group. The five girls start performing together as "Secret Girls."

Now, these five friends have to keep their two lives separate. Being a normal student and a famous idol is hard work! They must make sure no one finds out their big secret.

Meet the Cast

The main actors in Secret Girls played the members of the idol group. Here are the characters and the actors who played them:

  • Yūna Itō [ja] played Rio Shibasaki (柴崎リオ). Her stage name was Liz.
  • Kaede Hashimoto [ja] played Maya Aramaki (荒木まや). Her stage name was Bee.
  • Nao Asahi played Miki Morikawa (森川未紀). Her stage name was Morm.
  • Nanami Mitsuhashi [ja] played Asako Yamamoto (山本麻子). Her stage name was Yah.
  • Mayu Tomita played Ai Takano (高野愛). Her stage name was Eye.

Episodes and Release

Each episode of Secret Girls was released once a month. You could find them on the Ciao Ciao TV! DVD discs. These DVDs came as a bonus with the Ciao shōjo manga magazine. Later, the episodes were also available to watch online.

The show was also used in commercials. It helped advertise "Curl C Girl," a hair accessory line by Bandai.

A second season of Secret Girls started in July 2012. It also released new episodes every month. You could even watch the digital versions on iTunes!

Music from the Show

The cast of Secret Girls also formed a real music group. They performed songs from the show as their characters. Their first live concert was in July 2011. They also performed at the Tokyo Idol Festival in April 2012.

On March 21, 2012, they released a single called "Secret Girls." This single included popular songs from the show like "Go! My Way!", "A Little Star", and "Change the World." A special limited edition of the single came with a DVD. This DVD had footage from their 2011 concert, dance lessons, and behind-the-scenes videos.

Single Release

The single "Secret Girls" was released in 2012. It reached number 22 on the Oricon music charts in Japan.

Manga Comics

A manga version of Secret Girls was drawn by Pochi Kashiwa. It was called Secret Girls: Naisho no Idol (シークレットガールズ~ナイショのアイドル~). This manga was published monthly in the Ciao magazine. It ran from August 2011 to April 2013. The chapters were later collected into two comic books.

Light Novels

Secret Girls also had a series of light novels. These books were written by Uiko Miura [ja], who also wrote the TV show! Pochi Kashiwa, the manga artist, drew the pictures for the books. The light novels were published by Shogakukan.
