Sedalia is a small, unincorporated community located in Clinton County, Indiana, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger area called a township. Sedalia is found within Owen Township.

History of Sedalia

Sedalia was officially started on March 31, 1873. Two people, James A. Campbell and Jackson B. McCune, were responsible for planning out the community. When a town is "platted," it means its streets, lots, and public areas are mapped out.

How Sedalia Got Its Name

The community was named after another town called Sedalia, Illinois. This was the hometown of an important official from the Vandalia Railroad. Railroads were very important back then for connecting towns and moving goods.

Early Settlers and Businesses

Jackson B. McCune, one of the founders, built the very first house in Sedalia. He also became the first postmaster, which meant he was in charge of the mail. Other important early residents included William Miller, who opened the first store, and Allen Branch, who was the first blacksmith. A blacksmith makes and repairs things out of metal. Dr. Keeny was the first doctor in Sedalia, helping people stay healthy.

Where is Sedalia Located?

Sedalia is easy to find because it's located right along a main road called Indiana State Road 26. It's also just a short distance, about half a mile, east of another important road, Indiana State Road 75. These roads help connect Sedalia to other towns and cities in Indiana.
