Discovering Segura de León's Past
How Segura de León Became a Town
Segura de León has a long and interesting history. Around the years 1246 to 1248, a group of knights known as the Order of Santiago helped King Ferdinand III of Castile. They were fighting to take back control of lands in southern Spain. The knights helped secure the area around Montemolín, which included the land where Segura de León now stands. This was part of a bigger plan to clear out areas in the Sierra Morena mountains.
Becoming an Independent Town
After the knights took control, Segura de León was granted special rights. On March 26, 1274, Paio Peres Correia, who was the leader of the Order of Santiago, gave Segura a fuero. A fuero was like a special set of laws or rules that gave a town more freedom and rights. This particular fuero was similar to the one used in the town of Sepúlveda. Because of this new fuero, Segura de León became its own independent town, separate from the larger area of Montemolín.
