Five Deep Breaths
Five Deep Breaths was a short film Seith Mann made for his final project at New York University. It received the Spike Lee fellowship in 2002, which helped with its development. The film is set at a college for Black students. It tells the story of a young woman and her boyfriend. Another character, Mark, and his friends decide to get involved. Mann has said he likes to explore situations where it's not always clear what is right or wrong.
The film first showed at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It won several awards that year. These included first place at the Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation Award. It also won The Carl Lerner Award for Film with Social Significance. The film was shown at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival. It was also one of only four American short films chosen for the Cinefondation Competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. It won a Gold Plaque at the 2003 Chicago International Film Festival. It also won the Best Narrative Short Film award at the 2003 Los Angeles IFP/West Film Festival.
Film Maker magazine named Mann one of their "25 new faces of independent film" in 2003. They praised his "skillful" directing of Five Deep Breaths. The IFP also gave Mann the Gordon Parks Awards for Emerging African-American Filmmakers. This award recognized new Black filmmakers after his film was released.
Television Work
A TV producer named Robert F. Colesberry saw Five Deep Breaths. He showed it to the other producers of the HBO show The Wire. They asked Mann to watch their directors work during the third season in 2004. The show's creator, David Simon, said that Colesberry wanted Mann to direct an episode. However, Colesberry sadly passed away. The other producers felt they could not risk a new director without him. Simon remembers Mann watching director Ernest R. Dickerson very closely. He showed a "careful interest in the process."
In 2006, Mann joined the directing team for The Wire's fourth season. David Simon felt Mann deserved a chance because of his dedication. Mann directed his first TV episode, "Home Rooms". This was the third episode of the season. Simon was very happy with the episode. He said it was "beautifully covered."
Mann was also part of the ABC DGA Fellow class of 2005. This program helps encourage more diverse directors in filmmaking. In 2007, Mann was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. This was for his excellent directing in a drama series, specifically for "Home Rooms." Mann said he was "excited" about the nomination. He was also thankful to the NAACP for their work.
After The Wire, Mann directed episodes for many other TV shows. He directed two episodes of Grey's Anatomy in 2006. These were "The Name of the Game" and "Don't Stand So Close to Me." In 2007, Mann was nominated for a DGA Award. This was for his directing work on "The Name of the Game."
