Sekou Odinga (born Nathanial Burns, June 17, 1944 – January 12, 2024) was an American activist. He worked for the rights of Black people. He was part of groups like the Black Liberation Army in the 1960s and 1970s. He spent time in prison for his actions with these groups.

Sekou Odinga's Early Activism
In 1965, Sekou joined the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). This group was started by Malcolm X. After Malcolm X passed away, Sekou felt the OAAU was not going in the right direction.
Joining Important Groups
By 1967, Sekou became interested in the Black Panther Party. In early 1968, he helped create a local group of the Black Panther Party in the Bronx, New York. This group worked to help their community and fight for equal rights.
Working for Change Underground
Later, Sekou decided to work in secret. He joined the Black Liberation Army. This group also worked for Black rights, but they did so in a hidden way. Sekou worked underground for twelve years. He was arrested in 1981. He was later found guilty and sentenced to prison in 1984. Sekou Odinga was released from prison on November 25, 2014.
Later Life and Family
Sekou Odinga passed away on January 12, 2024. He was 79 years old. He had eight children and eighteen grandchildren. One of his children was the rapper Yaki Kadafi.
