Selig, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Selig is a small, quiet place located in Adams County, Ohio, in the U.S. state of Ohio. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or a village does.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a group of homes or buildings that are not part of any official city or town. Instead, they are usually governed by the larger county they are in. For Selig, this means Adams County, Ohio helps manage things like roads and services. These communities often grow around a specific feature, like a store or a post office, which was the case for Selig.

Origin of the Name

The community takes its name from the Selig family, early settlers who were central to the area's development.

Leopold Selig was the first of his immediate family to immigrate to the United States. He had previously served in the German military and received the Iron Cross of Bismarck for bravery. After the war ended in 1886, he left Germany to avoid five additional years of compulsory military service and settled in the oil fields of West Virginia. He soon sent for his wife and young son, Hugo.

The family later moved to Ohio, where Leopold established a tobacco warehouse, a cooper shop, and a general store. A small settlement grew around these enterprises and was named Selig, Ohio, in recognition of the family's contributions.

Leopold's older brother, Joseph, had immigrated to America in 1881. He eventually settled in Utah, working in the lumber industry, before relocating to western Colorado. There, he helped name and settle the town of Montrose.

History of Selig

Selig became an official place when a post office was opened there in 1886. This was a big deal because it meant people living nearby could send and receive mail easily. The post office stayed open for many years, closing in 1907.
