Sellwood-Moreland is a cool neighborhood in Southeast Portland, Oregon. It sits on a hill, looking over the Willamette River. To the north, it borders Brooklyn. To the east, you'll find Eastmoreland. The city of Milwaukie is to its south.

The neighborhood is connected to Southwest Portland by the Sellwood Bridge. This bridge crosses the Willamette River and is the southernmost bridge in Portland.

History of Sellwood-Moreland

Sellwood started as its own city. It was a competitor to early Portland. The land, about 1,320 acres, belonged to Reverend John Sellwood. He sold his land in 1882 to the Sellwood Real Estate Company.

The town of Sellwood officially became a city on February 25, 1889. This was approved by the Oregon Legislative Assembly. Later, in 1893, Portland took over Sellwood, and it became part of the larger city.

Sellwood has an amusement park called Oaks Park. It's right by the river and is a fun place to visit. There's also a bike trail next to the railroad tracks. This trail runs above the river and connects Milwaukie with downtown Portland.

The Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge was created in 1988. This special area helps protect many different kinds of animals and plants. You can walk on trails through the park. These trails go through woods, open fields, and wet marshlands.

Milwaukie Avenue and SE 13th Avenue are busy streets. You can find many restaurants there. There's also the Moreland Theater, unique shops, and antique stores. A middle school and other local shops are also in this area.

Education in Sellwood-Moreland

Students in Sellwood-Moreland go to schools in the Portland Public School District. Depending on where they live, elementary students attend either Llewelyn or Duniway Elementary. After elementary school, students go to Sellwood Middle School. For high school, they attend Cleveland High School.
