Selman's Story: A Look at Its Past
How Selman Got Started
The land where Selman now stands was first owned by J. B. Fesler. He sold it to J. O. Selman. Later, J. O. Selman sold the land to a company that planned towns. They divided the land into lots and named the new community "Selman" to honor him.
The first official sale of town lots happened in April 1920. However, some people had already bought land and started building before that.
Life in Early Selman
Selman was in an area where a lot of wheat was grown. A railroad line was quickly built to connect Selman to Buffalo. This helped farmers transport their wheat to other places.
The post office from a nearby community, Charleston, Oklahoma, moved to Selman. For a few years, it kept the name "Charleston" until September 21, 1923, when it officially became the "Selman" post office.
In the 1920s, Selman was a busy little town. It had a two-story school where kids learned. There was also a church, two grocery stores, a creamery (where dairy products were made), a café, a lumber and supply store, a variety store, a hotel, and even a bank.
Selman Today
Things have changed a lot since the 1920s. Today, there are no longer any railroad lines in Harper County. Selman is also not on a main highway. You reach it by taking N1980 Road off US Route 64.
The schools in Harper County are now only in Buffalo and Laverne. This means students from Selman would travel to one of those towns for school.
