About Senfronia Thompson

Senfronia Thompson was born in Booth, Texas. She grew up in Houston. She studied biology and education at Texas Southern University. She also earned law degrees from Thurgood Marshall School of Law and the University of Houston. She has two grown children, a grandson, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter.

Representing Her Community

Thompson represents House District 141. This area includes parts of northeast Houston and the Humble area. She works hard to make sure the people in her district have a voice in the state government.

A Long-Serving Leader

Senfronia Thompson has served in the Texas Legislature longer than any other woman. She has also served longer than any other African-American person in Texas history. This makes her a very experienced and respected leader.

In 2020, she wanted to become the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. This is a very important leadership role. However, the Republican Party kept control of the House in the election.

Standing Up for Voting Rights

In May 2021, Thompson and other Democrats in the Texas House worked to stop a bill called Senate Bill 7. This bill would have made it harder for some people to vote. Thompson shared stories about her own family's struggles to vote. To stop the bill, the Democrats left the House chamber just before a deadline. This action prevented the bill from being voted on that night.
