Sergi Mingote Moreno (born March 9, 1971 – died January 16, 2021) was a brave Spanish mountaineer. He was also a speaker and a coach, helping people learn and grow. Sergi was known for his amazing climbs, especially trying to conquer the world's highest mountains without extra oxygen. He also served his community as a mayor before focusing fully on his mountain adventures. Sadly, he passed away during a winter climb on K2, one of the most challenging peaks.

Who Was Sergi Mingote?

Sergi Mingote Moreno was born in Parets del Vallès, Spain. He had a strong passion for mountains from a young age. Besides climbing, he was also a lecturer and an executive coach. This meant he taught and guided people in business and leadership. He had special training from ESADE Business School and a Master's degree in working with non-profit groups.

A Passion for Mountains

Sergi was famous for his love of high mountains. He aimed to climb the fourteen highest peaks in the world. These mountains are called "Eight-thousanders" because they are all over 8,000 meters (about 26,247 feet) tall. What made his climbs even more impressive was that he tried to do them without using extra oxygen.

The 14x1000 Catalonia Project

Sergi started a big project called '14x1000 Catalonia Project'. His goal was to climb all fourteen 8,000-meter peaks. He wanted to do this in less than 1,000 days. And he aimed to do it all without using any extra oxygen. This was a very difficult and ambitious challenge.

Life as a Mayor

Before becoming a full-time mountaineer, Sergi was involved in politics. He was the mayor of his hometown, Parets del Vallès. He served as mayor for the Socialists' Party of Catalonia. He held this important job from 2011 to 2018. In 2018, he decided to leave his role as mayor. He wanted to focus completely on his mountaineering dreams.

The K2 Challenge

K2 is the second highest mountain in the world. It is known for being extremely difficult and dangerous to climb. Sergi decided to try and climb K2 in the winter. Winter climbs are much harder because of the extreme cold, strong winds, and deep snow. He was still trying to climb without extra oxygen.

The Accident on K2

On January 16, 2021, Sergi was descending from around Camp 1 on K2. This is a camp high up on the mountain. He fell down towards the Advanced Base Camp. His special GPS tracker showed unusual movements. This alerted other climbers at the Base Camp and Advanced Base Camp.

The unexpected movement on his tracker showed he had a big fall. Several climbers quickly went to the accident site. A medical team also rushed up from the Base Camp. They tried their best to help Sergi, but sadly, they could not save him.
