Sérgio Dutra Santos (born on October 15, 1975, in Diamante do Norte) is a professional volleyball player from Brazil. Many people know him as Serginho or Escadinha. He plays in a special position called libero. In 2009, he made history by becoming the first libero to win the MVP award in the World League.
Who is Serginho?
Serginho is thought to be one of the best liberos in volleyball history. He won more awards than any other libero during the 2000s. He is famous for his amazing skills in receiving serves and digging the ball. Because he was so good, other teams often tried to avoid serving the ball to him!
What Does a Libero Do?
A libero is a defensive player in volleyball. They wear a different colored jersey from their teammates. Their main job is to keep the ball from hitting the floor. They are experts at receiving powerful serves and "digging" (saving) hard-hit spikes. Liberos cannot serve, block, or attack the ball if it is above the net.
Serginho's Special Skills
Besides being great at defense, Serginho could also help with the team's offense. He was like a "second setter" if the main setter couldn't get to the ball first.
