The Serranía de Hornocal is a stunning range of mountains found in the Jujuy region of Argentina. These mountains are located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the city of Humahuaca. They are famous for their unique, colorful rock layers that look like a giant painting!

These incredible mountains are part of a larger rock formation called the Yacoraite Formation. This formation is made of limestone and stretches across a huge area. It goes from Salta in Argentina, through the beautiful Quebrada de Humahuaca valley, and even into Bolivia and Peru.

How High Are They?

The Serranía de Hornocal mountains are very tall! They reach an amazing height of about 4,761 meters (15,620 feet) above sea level. That's higher than many clouds!

A World Heritage Site

The area where the Serranía de Hornocal is located, called the Quebrada de Humahuaca, is very special. In 2003, it was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This means it's a place of great importance to the world, like a global treasure!

It earned this title for two main reasons:

  • Colorful Landscapes: The mountains themselves, with their many colors, are incredibly beautiful and unique.
  • Historic Inca Road: An ancient road used by the Inca people runs through this region. It was an important path for trade and travel many centuries ago.

Being a World Heritage Site helps protect these amazing mountains and their history for everyone to enjoy.
