The Setauket Presbyterian Church and Burial Ground is a very old church and cemetery. It's also called the First Presbyterian Church of Brookhaven. You can find it at 5 Caroline Avenue in Setauket, New York. This special place has a lot of history!

A Look at History

Building the Church

The church you see today was built in 1812. It was designed in the Federal style. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution. The church is made of strong wood and has a special bell tower.

Before this church, there was an even older one. That first church was on the village green. Sadly, it burned down after being hit by lightning. So, the current church was built to replace it in 1812.

The Old Burial Ground

The burial ground, or cemetery, is even older than the church. It was started way back in the 1660s! There are about 800 graves there. Many important people from Setauket's past are buried here.

A Revolutionary War Site

Did you know this church ground was once a fort? During the American Revolution, British supporters called Loyalists built a fort here. In August 1777, soldiers from the Continental Army attacked this fort. They were fighting for American independence.

Famous People Buried Here

Many of the first leaders of the church are buried in the cemetery. This includes Nathaniel Brewster and George Phillips. Also, many families who helped found the area are here. Their names include the Bayles, Floyds, and Smiths.

One very famous person buried here is Abraham Woodhull. He was a leader of the Culper spy ring. This secret group helped George Washington during the American Revolution. They gathered information on the British.

Another notable person is artist William Sidney Mount. He lived from 1807 to 1868. Setauket was his hometown, and he is buried in this historic ground.

National Recognition

Because of its important history, the church and burial ground were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. This means it's a special place that is protected for future generations.
