Growing Fruit and New Varieties
Seth's brother, Henderson Luelling, moved to Oregon in 1847. He brought fruit trees all the way from Iowa in his wagon. Henderson started a fruit farm, called an orchard, in Milwaukie.
Seth and his other brother, John, joined Henderson in 1847. Seth took over the business in 1857. He became very good at growing new types of fruits. He created many new kinds of cherries, rhubarb, grapes, and golden prunes.
The Famous Bing Cherry
Among his most famous creations were the Lincoln and the Black Republican cherries. In 1875, Seth developed the Bing cherry. This cherry is now the most popular type of sweet cherry grown in the United States.
Helping Shape Oregon's Government
Seth Lewelling was also interested in politics. He helped start the Oregon Republican Party. The names he gave to some of his cherries, like "Black Republican," show his political beliefs.
Working for Change
The Lewelling family played a big part in a movement for political change in Oregon. This movement was about giving citizens more power. In 1892, a young man named William S. U'Ren became very sick. The Lewellings took him into their home and helped him get better.
They often talked about making government better. These talks inspired U'Ren. He later helped create the initiative and referendum system in Oregon. This system allows citizens to propose and vote on laws directly.
Later Life and Legacy
Seth Lewelling had a stroke on July 1, 1895. He passed away at his home in Milwaukie on February 21, 1896.
