Seva (Puerto Rico) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Seva is a made-up town that appears in a famous book called Seva. This book was written by a Puerto Rican author named Luis López Nieves.

Many people think "Seva" is one of the most important short stories ever published in Puerto Rico. It has been printed many times and is studied in schools across the country. There are lots of detailed studies about this town and book, mostly written in Spanish.

How Seva Got Its Name

Luis López Nieves, the author, has often explained how he created the name "Seva." He wanted a name that sounded like "Ceiba," which is a real town in Puerto Rico. So, he changed the "C" to an "S." He also took out the "I" and changed the "B" to a "V." This is how he came up with "Seva" for his fictional town.

The Story of Seva

We don't know exactly when the fictional town of Seva was founded. However, the book Seva by Luis López Nieves clearly describes its end in August 1898. The author uses the Spanish–American War as the historical setting for his story.

In the book, the invasion of Puerto Rico begins on May 5, 1898. This is when the US Army lands on the beaches of the small town of Seva. The people of Seva bravely fought back. They managed to stop the army at the beach until August 6, 1898. On that day, more army troops arrived from another part of the island. These new troops surrounded the town. On August 10, 1898, the 720 citizens of Seva who were captured in the final battle lost their lives.

Where Seva Is Located

Just like the real town of Ceiba, the fictional town of Seva is on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. It faces the Atlantic Ocean. Seva is located north of Naguabo. It is also south of Fajardo and east of Río Grande.
