Discover the Park's Past
This area was once a very busy coal mine. Coal was dug here for over 400 years! Deep shafts were first made in Highley in 1870. The coal was then moved using the river and later by train. A new mine shaft was built in Alveley in 1935. Coal production started there in 1938. By 1940, all coal mining moved from Highley to Alveley.
The coal was taken to the Severn Valley Railway using a special ropeway. This ropeway went across the River Severn. The mine finally closed in January 1969. It was no longer making enough money. Work began in 1986 to clean up the old mine site. The park officially opened to visitors in 1992.
