Sevilla is a vibrant town and municipality located in the Valle del Cauca Department in Colombia. It is super famous for growing some of the best coffee in Colombia! Because of this, many people call Sevilla the "Coffee Capital of Colombia." In 2020, about 41,153 people lived here.

The Story of Sevilla

Sevilla was first started in 1903 by a person named Heraclio Uribe Uribe. He named the new town San Luis. Later, in 1914, the town became an official municipality. At that time, its name was changed to Sevilla, just like the beautiful city of Sevilla, Spain.

Geography and Climate of Sevilla

Sevilla is in the northeastern part of the Valle del Cauca Department. It's about 90 miles (or 145 kilometers) northeast of Cali, which is the capital city of the department. Sevilla sits on the western side of the Cordillera Central, one of the three big mountain ranges in Colombia.

The area around Sevilla is perfect for outdoor activities. You can enjoy long walks or go horseback riding through the amazing scenery. The town's location, about 1,650 meters (or 5,413 feet) above sea level, means it has a very interesting and changing climate.

Sevilla's Population Over Time

The number of people living in Sevilla has changed quite a bit over the years.

  • In 1993, a census counted 47,283 people in the whole municipality. About 19,311 of them lived right in the main town.
  • Back in 1928, the town had about 22,000 residents.
  • By 1961, the municipality grew to 56,793 people. This made it the fourth largest in the department at that time!
  • However, by 2005, the population had decreased to 41,632.
  • The most recent estimate from 2020 shows about 41,153 people living in Sevilla.

Sevilla is rich in many natural resources, especially thanks to its varied climate. This allows for a wide range of farm products to grow here.

What Grows in Sevilla?

You can find lots of different fruits and vegetables, such as:

  • Citrus fruits (like oranges and lemons)
  • Bananas
  • Sugar cane
  • Corn (maize)
  • Yucca
  • Many other vegetables

The farms outside the main town are mostly coffee producers. This is why Sevilla is known as the "Coffee Capital of Colombia"!

Minerals and More

Besides farming, there are also mines nearby. These mines contain valuable metals like gold, silver, and platinum.
