Seyppel is a small, unincorporated community located in Crittenden County, Arkansas, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but it still has people living there.
This community is easy to find because Highway 147 goes right through it. On the east side of Seyppel, you'll find the Mississippi Levee. This levee is a big wall built to protect the land from the Mississippi River. Just a short distance past the levee is Seyppel Landing, which is right on the Mississippi River itself.
History of Seyppel
Seyppel has a cool history with early settlers and famous musicians.
Early Settlers and Plantations
- Isaac Burgett was one of the first people to settle in this area. He was a planter, which means he owned and managed a large farm. When he passed away in 1865, he was the oldest person living in Crittenden County.
- Later, a man named Otto Seyppel took over the plantation. Otto was born in Germany in 1854. Today, the land that was once the Seyppel Plantation is known as "Allen Farm".
- A post office was opened in Seyppel in 1888. This made it easier for people in the community to send and receive mail.
Local Landmarks and Music Scene
- North of Seyppel, you can find Rogers Cemetery, where many people from the community are buried.
- To the west of Seyppel, there's the Walnut Grove Church and School. These buildings are very old but are still standing today, showing a piece of the community's past.
- Seyppel was also a place where famous blues musicians performed!
- The legendary harmonica player James Cotton was known to have played at a juke joint in Seyppel. A juke joint was a casual place where people gathered to listen to music, dance, and socialize.
- Another famous blues guitarist, Hubert Sumlin, had a funny accident there. He was watching Howlin' Wolf perform one evening and accidentally fell through a window!
