Seán Dineen (born February 12, 1944, died January 18, 2024) was a famous Irish mathematician. He was an expert in a special area of math called complex analysis. This field studies numbers that are more complex than just regular numbers. Most of his working life was at University College Dublin (UCD). There, he was a Professor of Mathematics and even led the math department. He retired in 2009 and passed away at 79 years old.

Early Life and Schooling

Seán Dineen was born in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland, on February 12, 1944. He went to St Mary's, the first high school for boys in Clonakilty. His parents, Jerry and Margaret Dineen, actually started this school in 1938. After his father died in 1953, his mother continued to run the school.

University Studies

In 1961, Seán started studying mathematics at University College Cork (UCC). He earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in math in 1964. While at UCC, he helped create the student mathematics society. He learned from many great teachers there. He then completed his Master of Science degree in 1965. After that, he won a special scholarship to travel and study more.

Seán was the first pure math student from UCC to go to the USA for his doctorate degree. He took classes at the University of Maryland. His main supervisor was John Horvath. However, he did most of his PhD research in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He worked at a place called Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) with Leopoldo Nachbin. He finished his PhD in 1970. His research was about "Holomorphy Types on a Banach Space."

Working at UCD

After finishing his studies, Seán Dineen spent a year (1969-1970) teaching at Johns Hopkins University in the USA. Then, he came back to Ireland. He worked for two years at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS).

In 1972, he got a job at University College Dublin (UCD). Seven years later, in 1979, he became a full professor and head of the mathematics department. He stayed at UCD for the rest of his career, officially retiring in 2009.

His Work in Mathematics

Seán Dineen's main work was in a field called infinite dimensional complex analysis. This area looks at how functions behave in very large, complex spaces. He also studied the shapes of spaces made of Holomorphic functions. These are special kinds of functions that are "smooth" and behave nicely.

Later in his career, he explored other topics like bounded symmetric domains and spectral theory. He once said that to stay active in math research, you need to "reinvent yourself regularly." This means always learning new things and exploring different areas.

Seán Dineen was a very productive mathematician. He wrote 10 books and over 100 research papers. His work has been mentioned by other scientists over 4,000 times. He also guided 11 PhD students and worked with more than 40 other researchers. He helped organize many math conferences and meetings. In 1987, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Irish Academy, which is a great honor for Irish scholars.
