The Story of the Señor de las Tribulaciones
A Miraculous Protector
In 1893, a very serious illness called cholera spread through Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Many people were getting sick. The city was in great danger. People believed the Señor de las Tribulaciones saved the city from this terrible sickness.
The story says that the statue was carried through the city streets in a special parade. After this parade, the illness miraculously stopped. Because of this, the Señor de las Tribulaciones is seen as the protector of the city. People also call him the Señor de Santa Cruz (Lord of Santa Cruz).
Earlier Miracles
Even before the cholera epidemic, people thought the statue was special. In 1795, almost a hundred years earlier, another miracle happened. The Señor de las Tribulaciones is said to have saved the wife of an important man in the city from a very bad illness. During this time, the statue also seemed to sweat in a miraculous way.
Special Parades
Today, the statue is still very important to the people of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Every Holy Tuesday, the statue is carried in a parade through the city streets. The parade goes to the exact spot where the cholera epidemic stopped long ago. The statue also takes part in another parade on Good Friday.
