Early Life and Activism

Sfiso Buthelezi was born in Mahlabathini, a place in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, in 1961.

When he was 20 years old in 1981, he joined a group called uMkhonto we Sizwe. This group was connected to the African National Congress. In 1983, he was arrested and sent to Robben Island prison. This prison was famous for holding political prisoners during a time of big changes in South Africa. He stayed there for eight years and was released in 1991.

Political Career and Public Service

After his release, Sfiso Buthelezi began a career in public service. He used his skills as an economist to help his country.

Early Advisory Roles

From 1994 to 1999, Buthelezi worked as an economic advisor. He advised Jacob Zuma when Zuma was in charge of economic development in KwaZulu-Natal. He also advised Mathews Phosa, who was a leader in the Mpumalanga province.

Key Leadership Positions

In 1999, Buthelezi became the Chief Operating Officer of Makana Investment Corporation. That same year, the president at the time, Thabo Mbeki, chose him to be the first chairperson of the National Gambling Board.

In 2005, he joined the board of the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC). This organization later changed its name to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). Buthelezi became the first chairperson of PRASA in 2009 and served until 2014.

Role as Deputy Minister

In April 2017, President Jacob Zuma appointed Buthelezi as the Deputy Minister of Finance. This meant he helped manage the country's money and economy.

After President Zuma resigned in February 2018, the new president, Cyril Ramaphosa, changed some government roles. Buthelezi then became the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. In this role, he helped with farming, forests, and fishing industries.
